So, there was a shooting last night at the Pentagon. Thankfully, the shooter–J. Patrick Bedell–didn’t kill anyone, and was himself taken out by law enforcement officials. Naturally, not being able to leave a bad situation alone, some of the online Left sought to tie the shooter to conservatives.
Patterico details why this latest smear campaign is nonsensical and wrong. More debunking can be found here. It would be kind of nice if people on the port side refrained from the kinds of McCarthyite accusations discussed in this post, but almost seems as though they revel in making them.

Of course, this was an appalling and despicable attack. My condolences to all who are affected–the wounded, their family members, and the family and friends of the dead.
I remember when Chomsky made this statement back when the Blogosphere was young, and when the likes of Brian Leiter (yes, that is a sneer associated with the name) sought to defend it using bluff and bluster.
