The Reversal of Anwar Ibrahim

by Rachel Motte

This week, Barack Obama reached out once more to the Muslim world. Following his promise last June in Cairo, President Obama hosted a Summit on Entrepreneurship, “to identify how we can deepen ties between business leaders, foundations and social entrepreneurs in the United States and Muslim communities around the world.” Bringing together 250 participants from 60 countries, the Administration once again tried to build bridges between East and West, and even brought Secretary of State Hillary Clinton along to close the summit on Tuesday evening.

Yet it remains as hard as ever to figure out who are America’s real friends and allies in the Muslim world, aside from the good King and Queen of Jordan, a handful of emirates, and the Saudi royals. Take the strange case of Malaysia, for example. The Malaysian state and its ruling party are broadly constructive and cooperative with the United States — but its political opposition is another story. And that’s the reverse of what often gets portrayed in Western media.

The present Malaysian leadership is pro-business, pro-American and prepared to stand up and be counted in the Muslim world as a strategic U.S. ally. During the recent Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak pledged to assist Washington on numerous fronts, and even shut off petroleum supplies to Iran within hours of returning home to Kuala Lumpur.

Though Malaysia isn’t quite as far along as Muslim nations such as Jordan or Egypt with respect to Israel — it refuses to recognize the Jewish state or its passports — its official anti-Israel position does not come from a societal wellspring of anti-Semitism. Though Malaysia used to have a small Jewish community of its own, it dwindled as a consequence of the Second World War rather than, as in most of the Muslim world, as vengeance for Israel’s founding.

Malaysia’s reputation as a majority-Muslim nation known for moderation and stability is hard won in this decade, and a result of the leadership of the present Prime Minister and his immediate predecessor.

Prior to October 2003, Malaysia’s position as a responsible member of the community of nations was less certain. This was thanks to the country’s former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammed. Even in power, Mahathir was a well-known anti-Semite and anti-American.

This past January, Mahathir declared that the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States were “staged as an excuse to mount attacks on the Muslim world.” He didn’t stop there. Speaking at that same month’s General Conference for the Support of Al-Quds (that is, the Arabic name for Jerusalem), he declared that Israel was created to solve “the Jewish problem” in Europe after Hitler failed to complete the Final Solution. “Even after their massacre by the Nazis of Germany,” said Mahathir, the Jews “survived to continue to be a source of even greater problems for the world.”

The case of Mahathir isn’t merely one of a has-been politician with a penchant for vile Jew-baiting. He still retains influence with hardliners. And the man whom he mentored, and then repudiated, is now leader of Malaysia’s political opposition — and he’s showing the world how well he learned under Mahathir’s tutelage.

Anti-Semitism is now resurgent in Malaysia thanks to opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, a charismatic firebrand of a politician who collaborated with Mahathir — as a deputy prime minister and top aide— for nearly a decade in a relationship that Ibrahim described as being one of “father and son.” In 1998 Ibrahim got impatient about taking over from Mahathir, embarked upon a power struggle, and lost. For his troubles, Mahathir put him on trial for corruption and sodomy: and Anwar Ibrahim ended up in jail at the hand of his mentor.

Anwar Ibrahim

Upon his release, Anwar Ibrahim came to Washington, D.C., and has spent the past decade cultivating a genteel, enlightened image in the West. Otherwise informed American observers of foreign affairs have adopted him as an exemplar of liberal Southeast Asian and/or Muslim democratic governance. Just a few years ago, he was invited to teach for a year at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, from which he cultivated the acquaintances of eminent Jewish Americans like Paul Wolfowitz — as a means of showing just how far behind him was his own militant Islamist past.

Indeed, as recently as 2008, Al Gore — usually a savvy and perceptive man — could be found posting on his blog in defense of Ibrahim’s dignity in the face of criticism. That’s big-name Western approval one can’t buy — but one can work hard for it with the right enemies and media outreach inside the Beltway.

It also helps if one knows what to tell Western audiences who tune in to Western media outlets. This past March, in an interview with CNN World, Ibrahim told Wajahat Ali, “Stoking the flames of anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism is a good distraction from the stench in [Muslim societies’] own backyard, namely rampant corruption, denial of basic human rights, abuse of power and the suppression of civil society.”

The reality is that if you’d asked a well-informed American who the liberal democrat was in Malaysia between 1999 and 2009, he or she might well have said, “Anwar Ibrahim.”

But does Anwar Ibrahim’s portrayal of himself outside Malaysia match Anwar Ibrahim’s actions within his own country? Unfortunately, Ibrahim has decided to make his mark in domestic Malaysian politics — away from CNN, Al Gore, and Johns Hopkins — as an anti-American, anti-Semitic demagogue.

The proximate cause of Ibrahim’s descent into the foul rhetoric of anti-Semitism was his decision to exploit the government’s hiring of a Washington, D.C., public relations firm, APCO, to do minor communications work within Malaysia. Like many international firms, this one has done business within Israel, and even counts among its senior personnel persons of the Jewish faith.

Ibrahim has now effectively trashed his old friends in Washington and has used this PR contract as an excuse to spin a dark conspiracy theory of Jewish control, Zionist plots, and subversion.

Ibrahim’s lieutenants have charged, among other things, that the Malaysian government has “engag[ed] a company that has a close tie with the Zionist regime in Israel. Its advisory panels consist of former security chief of the Israeli government, and many of their staff are formerly from the Israel Security Agency,” and that “its operators in Tel Aviv have close links to the Zionist regime.”

Ibrahim himself has delved headlong into anti-Semitic theorizing, publicly alleging that there are “Israeli intelligence personnel in the Police IT unit.” Worse, he connected his anti-Semitism to his anti-Americanism, when he angrily denounced the Malaysian Prime Minister’s politically courageous decision to stand with President Obama and cut off oil supplies to an Iran seeking nuclear weapons. Ibrahim stood in the legislature to charge that the supposedly “Jewish-controlled” PR firm hired by the Prime Minister was, in fact, working to manipulate Malaysian policy on America’s behalf.

Ibrahim angrily demanded: “How can our foreign policy have changed dramatically,” unless Jews were controlling Malaysian affairs for America’s benefit? “Our policy on Iran shows how weak we are. Unprecedented in the history of our country, even Mahathir Mohamad himself never shifted in Afghanistan and the Palestinian question.”

Remarkably, Ibrahim closed his statement with oblique praise for Mahathir — the man who shaped Ibrahim’s core thinking on things Jewish and American.

The sad truth is that we shouldn’t be surprised by Ibrahim’s descent into anti-Americanism or anti-Semitism. When he told CNN that “stoking the flames of anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism is a good distraction,” he wasn’t condemning: he was observing and prescribing.

This is not the first time Ibrahim has gone down this road: he has a history of Jew-baiting when expediency calls for it. To pick just one example, in 2008, with Malaysian elections approaching, he casually tossed out this charge in an interview with IslamOnline: “I have evidence proving that the government is backing the Jewish lobby in the U.S. and some parties inside Israel.” (To the credit of the Malaysian electorate, Ibrahim’s opposition coalition failed to win a majority in that election.)

And as scholars of terrorist finance like Ilan Weinglass have documented, “Anwar Ibrahim is a founder and director of the Muslim Brotherhood affiliated International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), a think tank in Virginia that has alleged links to terrorism.” In 2002-2003, Ibrahim’s institute in Virginia was even investigated by the FBI, IRS and CIA for alleged financing of Hamas and Hizbollah.

In looking for America’s friends in the Muslim world, it’s often difficult to know the Good Guy from the Bad Guy. But it’s a good rule of thumb that the politician promulgating anti-Semitic conspiracy theories is not a friend of America.

In Malaysia, the events of the past few months have made it crystal clear a strange role reversal: it’s opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim who is whipping up anti-Semitic sentiment — and it’s Prime Minister Najib Razak who is, for better or worse, standing firm with President Obama and the United States.

  • I am a Malaysian and neither I am a Muslim, it won't take a genius to see the correlated coincidence that everything changed after the highly questionable new PM Najib was put on the center stage of the fake nuclear summit, the fact is this man have many questaionable issues unanswered concerning some civil case and the scandalous submarine procurement mess mega corruption to name a few., when a new leader like this was put on such important stature by Washington it does meant to say that some thing fishy is going on and Anwar is doing the right thing for us, just because "Asking question" is not a good virtue in US politics the same is quite supportive from us here in the Malaysian parliament, we decide Anwar's fate, not US media. Btw, can US media be trusted?

It takes so long to know Anwar for what he is. Congratulations Rachel for waking up.

"For his troubles, Mahathir put him on trial for corruption and sodomy: and Anwar Ibrahim ended up in jail at the hand of his mentor." Are you trying to say that because Anwar made lots of troubles, Mahathir opted to "sabotage" him by setting all the trials and accusations.?
  • qazimoto,

You have no idea who is Anwar Ibrahim. This man is willing to do almost anything in order to become the next prime minister. He cares for nobody and he only thinks of himself as the messiah. If you are talking about Islam and democracy well let me remind you that in many Islamic countries democracy just don't work out well. Most of these countries are under pressures and the economic system collapsing.....well what do you expect ?????????
  • loveperak
anwar is not anti america! he's anti israel. he said in parliament that he doesnt have a problem to be good friends with america but not with israel. and now najib is doing business with israel. thats what anwar want to fight because now israel-spy is in malaysian police and govt!
  • jazzem
How do you know about this?
  • jazzem
Who Told you this..how you know about this...
  • Now this is a refreshing rarity - an American writer who actually does her homework, uses her brain and makes a fair and accurate analysis of Malaysian politics! Anwar and Pakatan Rakyat supporters will be angered by this -- that the writer doesn't automatically `toe the line' and be supportive of them as most western `journalists' are wont to do.
  • lokenpal
Its not crystal clear by any measure. Anwar is only questioning national security issues being outsourced to foreigners. Wouldn't the US do the same.

Your posting of the smirking picture of Anwar, clearly shows u right-wing leaning political philosophy. You guys lost the election...well??

BTW......“We are not at all against Jews or are anti-Jewish in anyway. But Malaysia’s current foreign policy is very clear on the issue of Zionism – which is different from the Jewish people,” Tian (Anwar's party director) told Harakahdaily.

    Qazimoto,

Let's face it, Anwar is no better than Najib. You said Najib is a wolf in sheeps clothing, well ANWAR is even worse, a devil in Imam clothing. And to quote from http://asiasentinel.com is just like quoting Lim Kit Saing on DAP Portal.

Move on, even if Malaysia needs a new leader, it won't be ANWAR!
  • frustratedmalaysian
And either will it be Najib. Besides, we do not even have a good leader in Malaysia so do not just say which worst where every single damn Malaysian politician is no damn different.
  • qazimoto
The investigations of IIIT were all found to be inconclusive and all agencies confirmed there was no case or basis to any of the charges. This is Daniel Pipe's/Steve Emerson style journalism.

Also it's important to know that Najib's administration is regularly and explicitly using the government controlled media in Malaysia to call Anwar an "Agent of the Jews", a lackey of Paul Wolfowitz, a Jewish Agent, and Mahathir said Anwar would make a good Prime Minister of Israel.

This is Malaysian politics. It's about character assassination and the mob of Malay Muslims who like to hear this stuff in elections.

APCO signed a contract with Malaysia for 10s of millions of dollars. There are former Israeli ambassadors on the board of APCO. APCO did work with Israel in the past. That's enough for a guilt by association message for the Malaysian electorate.

As for the real record, Anwar is on the record literally hundreds of times since the 1990s talking about interfaith, civilisational dialogue, the higher objectives of the sharia, pluralism, democracy, individual rights. He has publicly stated in malaysia that the govt cannot persecute muslims for leaving the faith, that non muslims should be allowed to use the world allah (a controversy which najib handled poorly), that non muslims should have rights in Muslim countries. (See washington post - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/06/AR2010020602537.html)

SO this article, if APCO didn't pay for it to be placed in the first place, misses the larger picture which is that in the Muslim world you have only a handful of leaders who have credibility among their own people, the ability to communicate to the west, and are committed to universal values that include freedom, justice, rule of law, personal civil liberties and good governance. Anwar is one of those few and what is happening right now is an attempt to derail him before he topples the UMNO govt that is teetering on the brink of collapse.

I can almost guarantee that in Malaysia if Anwar get's sent to jail this year on trumped up charges (again) that within 10 years you will have more canings, more whippings, more opposition politicians locked up in jail, more censorship, more corruption and more oppression. Malaysia will fall off the map in terms of its relevance to the rest of the world and will be overtaken by every other Southeast Asian nation with perhaps the exception of Myanmar.

Najib is a wolf in sheeps clothing. He came to Washington DC and got meetings with Obama because he gave obama what he wanted- concessions on Iran. In exchange he got to take some pictures with him and go back to Malaysia to say how Obama endorses the Malaysian administration. That's what 20 million in lobbying gets you, even with President Obama.

But is Najib really a partner for the US? He's clinging to survival because of the Mongolian Murder Mystery (see http://asiasentinel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2429&Itemid=229) . His own deputy prime minister is waiting to stab him in the back. Mahathir is sitting on top of his head. He talks about reform on the one hand and on the other the judiciary in malaysia is still rotten to the core, editors of newspapers are harassed and threatened for reporting favorably on the opposition, and opposition supporters are threatened, chased out of the country and risk going to jail without any trial. He just barely eeked out an election victory this weekend, but not without plenty of cheating (http://asiasentinel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2431&Itemid=178). 1/2 of the campaign in this election was that Anwar is a homosexual and a jewish agent.

Rachel Motte should do more homework before she starts praising Najib and attacking Anwar.
  • "Anwar is one of those few and what is happening right now is an attempt to derail him before he topples the UMNO govt that is teetering on the brink of collapse."
Just a minute, please... HAHAHAHA! You are one very funny guy -- the uncommon ability to crack jokes while keeping a straight face!

"teetering on the brink of collapse"... never mind if the phrase has entered the cliche category; it still sounds dramatic. Unfortunately, it's totally wrong. Yup, `totally'. That's one red flag that indicates there are more inaccuracies here. To anyone with just basic knowledge of Malaysian politics, Umno right now is at its strongest point since the March 2008 General Election.

To the annoyance of Anwar Ibrahim and the motley politicians hoping that Najib would be engulfed and paralysed by multi-pronged attacks, the PM has shown unexpected savvy, resilience and decisiveness. Najib has turned things around for the government. In late 2008 after Anwar won a by-election with a crushing majority, things did look bleak for Umno. That was when the duplicitous and deceitful racists in the Pakatan coalition showed their true colours while hiding behind the fake "Bangsa Malaysia" facade. And that's when the backlash started -- instead of being defensive, Najib attacked... and the state of Perak fell.

Rachel Motte has done more than just doing her homework -- she used her brain too to dissect the issues and have solid understanding of "what is" when it comes to Malaysia. This country has its problems but I wouldn't trust the Bangsat Malaysia monkeys to ever handle them.

As one of Malaysian youth, i am so upset with the political will played by Anwar Ibrahim. I do really hope that American writer after come out with fair and just article in illustrating Malaysia's political condition; I think Motte did a good research before writing this article.

Btw, it shoud be highlighted that there is nothing with Anwar Ibrahim. Yea, I admit that he get a powerful oratory skills, but he is a big liar (Referring to Kg Pala issue- get the video from Utube), speculator(APCO issue) and too ambitious(16 September)!

Najib is much better that Anwar! Mahathir is the best ever!
  • What a relief! Apparently, it's now not entirely correct to say that "most youths support Anwar Ibrahim and Pakatan Rakyat... are dead against Najib, Umno, Barisan Nasional". In the next general election, it's people like you who will tip the balance if the situation remains like today. I'm not that old, but for sure I'm not in any `youth' category:-P

I have to mention this -- many people might quickly categorise me as "rightwing, pro-Umno". Well, would you believe that for more than two decades I was with the opposition?...PAS, Parti Sosialis Rakyat Malaysia, Semangat 46, Keadilan. If you'd care to read my blog (It is said to be "The most influential blog review on the planet!" Heheh!), I was still with Anwar and Pakatan during the 2008 General Election... right until October 2008. I was with them long before the present supporters who suddenly claim to aspire towards "Justice and Fairplay", "Bangsa Malaysia" and what-not other noble-sounding goals... but each with daggers behind their backs.

Were they with Anwar at the height of `Reformasi' in 1999, battled riot police...despite evidence of his trial being unjustly carried out? NO, THEY WEREN'T... they didn't stand up to be counted then. I was there. Of the DAP, only Lim Kit Siang had proposed to join forces with PAS, to "fight a common cause". And he paid dearly for this. The majority couldn't care less about Anwar and things like alleged injustice -- they just didn't want to rock the boat.

So, why have they suddenly decided to go the other way, suddenly talking about "justice, equality"? Because they think that Anwar can swing enough Malay votes to boot out the status quo... and then they'll do in the Malays. I know it's not "all of them", for I'm convinced that many are honest and sincere. I can work and live with them... people like Michelle Yoon of I am Malaysian, CT Choo (de minimis) and Goh Wei Liang for instance. But not with the deceitful and the devious with hidden agendas... people who bank on Anwar's oratory skills to work and keep the masses at fever pitch with perennial hatred towards the current government.

I wish we can somehow give Umno and the BN a big kick so that they'll serve us better. But NOT to kick them out and replace them with someone who's willing to trade, dump or/and take in principles and fundamentals that hold Malaysia together when it suits his own purpose.
