“Should Joe Kennedy’s Chavez Ties Disqualify Him From A Senate Seat?”

by Pejman Yousefzadeh

Yes. And voters should find as much if Kennedy decides to run for his uncle’s seat.

Harder questions, next time.

It is true, of course, that the United States imports lots of oil from Venezuela. It is true that Kennedy’s program was indeed a “drop in the bucket.” But United States Senators should not be useful tools of Hugo Chavez, and if a potential Senate candidate has shown a disturbing propensity to serve as a useful tool of Hugo Chavez, that’s as good a sign as any that said potential Senate candidate shouldn’t progress past the “candidate” phase. In Kennedy’s case, hopefully he won’t even progress past the “potential” phase.
