I am totally tripping about the Governor of South Carolina admitting to an extra-marital affair where he consciously embellished his whereabouts, was totally AWOL and left the state vulnerable. I am a native of South Carolina and the majority of my family still reside there. Potentially something could have happen to compromise the safety of South Carolinians and the lead man in charge was in Argentina being led by the wrong head.

I'm glad his wife did not stand up there w/him. The saddest thing is what he did to his family -
the affair, the lying, the schemes, the secret trip on Father's Day weekend, the press attacks
on them because of him.....he was a selfish jerk.

He just broke a major public vow by lying about his whereabouts, going AWOL on the job,
and who knows what (if any) financial things may come of this. He's toast.

Resign: for lying to the state, to the staff, leaving your post. You acted like a high school
idiot, not a grown up idiot.

It stunt the GOP again. Ensign, and now this, after Foley, and a few others. Guys like Thune
and Romney and Steele get lost in the shuffle, amidst all the fakers. Gingrich is a personal lout, and he's fine w/it.

So, yes, the GOP will take hits for this for a long time, as it should. You hold yourself up to
higher standards, when they're broken, you take the hits. Ensign and Sanford have hurt the
party badly.

However, it's not an excuse to abandon values and morals and holding yourself, and the
party, to basic ideas. Something the Democrats never do very well, or want to discuss.

I wish his family well. I wish his wife well. I hope he has the guts to be a man for once, and
take control of the fall out. Don't blame your upbringing, your wife, kids, job, the party, for
your midlife folly with a Latin woman who knew you were married, and didn't care - as you didn't either.

This is a chance for a person like Romney, or Palin, or Thune, or Jindahl, or even a Blackburn or
others, or some conservative business or public figure to step forward and make some early steps. Obama has the press in his back pocket. Any GOP candidate in 2012 is a real darkhorse
no matter what. This type of mess only makes it harder to make progress.

Step down Governor. Let the party in that state try to get a grip. You can take long
trips to Buenos Aires from now on. For a long, long time.
