Great article. I found Mr. Sullivan to be a despicable human being and writer in the early 1990's when he was an editor at the New Republic. I learned that he is more interested in doing damage than fairly reporting on a subject. This awareness was from an up close and personal experience I had with him and his underling writer Hanna Rosin when they were crafting a story about me and an organization I ran. He and Rosin chose to ignore facts, withhold information as balanced information would have stood in the way of the biases conjured from his peanut sized and damaged brain. Best, Jimmydale

Andrew Sullivan is a real screwball.
Saw his interview with Joy Behar(?)...where he belittles Sarah Palin. The Man is a fool. For one thing - where he wants to use VETTED....he uses VESTED! For another....it is MARGARET
Thatcher.....not MARTHA;.........AAAAHHHH why go on?
He is simply not worth reading.....and isn't anywhere NEAR Sarah Palin's League.

Don't quit your Day-job, Andrew.

It is cleverly written, but to be character assassination, the subject would have to have some character.

You're exactly right. It was almost as if someone had flipped a switch. I've never seen anyone make such a rapid and frightening transformation. One day he was normal, the next he was a raving lunatic. Quite sad really.

Great piece for the first two-thirds but calling Sully an anti-Semite at the end is over the top and unfair (much like Andrew Sullivan himself).

I think that particular plummet could be encapsulated in a haiku:

Hello, thesaurus
I'm ridin' you to the top
Of distant second

I liked Sullivan back in 2001 or so. I thought he was pretty genuinely conservative, but without the ideological knee jerk. I thought that his writings during that time were often fresh, not ideologically bound and orginal. His wrestling with his personal contradictions between Catholicism and his own homsexuality were poignant and thoughtful. His wrtings on the impending ivasion of Iraq were some of the most thoughtful out there. His thoughts on well-worn topics like gay marriage made me rethink my own notions I even mailed him a check or two.

But then came the fateful day when George W. Bush spoke out about the gay marriage issue being preempted by unelected state judges, and spoke in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act. Relatively tame pronouncements along the lines of the Clintons and The Messiah himself, not the hateful screeds projected upon "conservatives" by the gay lobby. Well, within days, if not hours, Sullivan went utterly berserk. Suddenly, Bush was Satan. Iraq was a war crime, conservatism was misogynistic, and Bizarro Andrew was unleashed on the world. From that day, the intellectual integrity vanished, the originality of thought was replaced by rote recitation of far left paranoism and sober thought was replaced by raw, unhinged emotion. The eloquent description above describes him to a tee. And of course, the more outlandish, hateful, virulent and irresponsible his ravings have become, the more accepted he has been in such formerly esteemed publications a Time, The NYT and The Atlantic, all of course long gone over to the radical, hate-crazed Left.

He's gone, and he ain't comin' back. I gave up on him many years ago.
