Toomey and Cornyn: The Showdown at Grover’s

by Brad Jackson

In what had to make for a few uncomfortable moments, NRSC Chairman John Cornyn and Pennsylvania Senate challenger Pat Toomey both spoke at Grover Norquist’s breakfast meeting in Washington this morning. Cornyn weighed in on the impending Toomey vs. Specter 2010 showdown earlier this month and sided with Specter saying Specter was, “our best bet to keep this Senate seat in the GOP column.”

At the meeting this morning, Cornyn spoke first and took no questions. Shortly there after, Toomey was introduced to big applause. He did not go out of his way to criticize the NRSC Chairman saying that Cornyn was elected by Senate Republicans and that Pennsylvania Republicans will now have a chance to elect their own candidate.

Earlier this week, in an interview with The Hill, Senator Cornyn said he would support Toomey if he won his primary battle with Arlen Specter, even indicating that, despite his earlier endorsement of Specter, the NRSC may not spend any money in the race.

“I may be a minority, but I tend to think primaries are not all bad,” he said.

I’m sure Pat Toomey would agree with that statement. Primaries aren’t a bad thing at all.
